The gymnasium inside Lakeland High School was lively Sunday evening when the Camp Community College Hurricane’s men’s basketball team hosted the Penn State-Wilkes Barre Mountain Lions for its first home game in program history. 

Head coach Franklin Chatman says his young squad is buying into the system, and the results have paid off early.

After beating Richard Bland in its first game as a program, the Hurricanes knocked off the Mountain Lions 67-59 to move to 2-0 on the season.

Hurricanes James Barlow, who, according to Chatman, was not feeling well and was not sure if he would play, wreaked havoc on defense, pulling down eight of his 10 rebounds on the defensive side of the court. Barlow also blocked seven shots. Offensively, Suffolk native Keimari Artis dropped in 19 points, going 4-11 from beyond the three-point line and 5-18 from the floor to lead all Hurricane scorers.

Chatman said his takeaway from the win over PSWB was his team is farther along than he once thought.

“We always talk about connectivity, like meaning guys have to be connected to each other,” Chatman said. “Guys have to be connected to each other in order for us to be successful on the defensive and offensive end, really. So, my takeaway is that we were a little further along.”

As a team, the Hurricanes shot just 42.6% from the field and 44.4% from beyond the arc. Camp looks to continue its winning streak this weekend when they head to Montgomery, Maryland, for the 2023 Tipoff Tournament.
