Franklin girls fight to keep playoff hopes alive

The varsity Lady Broncos basketball team of Franklin High School looked new and improved as it faced the visiting Sussex Central High School Lady Tigers on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in a game played at Peggy H. Wilkins Gymnasium.
After having a good first half, the home team took a 16-8 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Lady Broncos also continued with good scoring in both the third and fourth quarters, scoring 15 and 21 points to the Lady Tigers’ 12 and five points, respectively. The game ended with Franklin winning, 52-25.
In scoring for the Lady Broncos, three players ended up in double figures. They included freshman Jahnia Jordan, with 17 points, junior Mykira Barrett, with 12 points, and senior Roshanda Hoskie, with 10 points.
In remarks after the game, Franklin Head Coach Dennis Sumblin said, “It felt good to win one. We are still struggling a little, but the girls are still fighting to keep our playoff hopes alive. If we can get a couple more wins before the season is over, we might be able to make the playoffs.
“We are seeing a lot of improvement tonight, and it was a good job,” he continued. “We’ve got to continue to work hard and practice the fundamental skills — how to handle, pass and dribble the basketball. That is the key. If we can get those things done, we should be able to get us a win.”
The Lady Broncos fell 49-15 to visiting Greensville County High School on Friday, Jan. 19, but have a busy slate ahead of them, with opportunities to bounce back.
Franklin (4-13, 4-6 Tri-Rivers) will host Brunswick High School on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 4:30 p.m., visit Windsor High School on Friday, Jan. 26, at 4:30 p.m. and host Nansemond River High School on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m.
