The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office completed an investigation and search and then gave the “all clear” at Southampton Middle School on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 21, after the school was put on lockdown following a report of a weapon on campus.
In a voice message sent out at 2:47 p.m. to parents, Will Melbye, of Southampton County Public Schools, stated the following:
“This afternoon at Southampton Middle School, a report of a weapon on campus was received by administration, and the building was placed on immediate lockdown.
“Following an investigation of the report and a subsequent search of the school and grounds, the ‘all clear’ was given by the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.
“All students and staff returned to their regular days at approximately 2 o’clock.
“We are very grateful to the Southampton County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia State Police, Courtland Police and the United States Coast Guard members that responded this afternoon.
“Thank you, be safe, and remember — if you see something, say something.”
