Standout 7- and 8-year-old baseball players from Windsor recently showed they could hold their own against teams from much larger localities by turning in excellent performances at the 2024 Southern Chesapeake Summer Baseball Bash.

The Windsor 8U All-Stars, affiliated with the PONY organization, went 2-2 at the Baseball Bash to finish as runners-up.

“I was ecstatic about how they played baseball,” Windsor Head Coach Jonas Bass said.

He noted that his team, composed of the best 8U ballplayers in Windsor, has been practicing for the last month, and the Southern Chesapeake event was its first chance to compete.

The four-team tournament began Saturday, June 15, with pool play.

“Each team played two games, and depending on their records and their scores, they were seeded for bracket play the next day, on Sunday, and it was single-elimination on Sunday,” Bass said.

In its first game of pool play, Windsor fell 9-3 to the Southern Chesapeake Athletic Association Thunder. 

But the Windsor All-Stars bounced back later that day, winning their second game 7-5 over the SCAA All-Stars.

“And then that put us at the No. 2 seed in the tournament,” Bass said.

In its first game of bracket play on Sunday, June 16, Windsor faced the SCAA All-Stars again and defeated them again, this time 5-4.

In the championship, Windsor took on the OBX All-Stars, who were able to pull away for a 12-6 win.

“It was a close game,” Bass said. “They just had more base hits than we did, really.”

But the coach was quite pleased with the quality of play he witnessed from his players.

“You’ve got to think that we’re such a small town of Windsor and we went and competed with Chesapeake and Outer Banks,” he said. “So I was absolutely thrilled with the way they played baseball.”

The Windsor 8U All-Stars compete next in the PONY Sectional Tournament, which will feature all-stars from all around the area. This 16-team tournament is set to run Saturday-Tuesday, June 22-25, in Southern Chesapeake.
