Storms barreled through Southampton County Sunday leaving a wake of destruction in its path, including on the property of the Franklin-Southampton County Fairgrounds and the fair scheduled for this week.

The National Weather Service reported Monday afternoon, Aug. 5, that its survey team determined the damage to the fairgrounds was from straight line winds of 80-90 mph.

It is clear from the photos in the post that the grounds sustained extensive damage.

The post on Facebook reads: “Dear community and fair members,

Today we had a tornado that severely damage the grounds.  Thankfully no one was injured but, unfortunately, we will have to cancel this year’s fair. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers at this time. Please do not come down to the fairgrounds at this time, the grounds are closed.”
