Part of Route 643 to close during culvert work in Southampton

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close a portion of Route 643 (Darden Scout Road) in Southampton County beginning as early as Monday, Aug. 12, to perform culvert restoration.
A VDOT news release stated that during this work, a portion of Route 643 will be closed to all traffic, beginning at Route 646 (Governor Darden Road) to 0.25 miles north of the intersection, with signed detours in place.
This work is necessary to extend the lifespan of the existing culvert and is estimated to be completed as early as September. The work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.
Access to all existing private properties and businesses along Route 643 will be maintained at all times.
Traffic attempting to head south on Route 643 to reach Route 646 will use the following detour:
- Travel toward intersection with Route 632 (Sycamore Avenue);
- Turn onto Route 632 (Sycamore Road) east;
- Right onto Route 641 (Sedley Road) and
- Right onto Route 646 (Governor Darden Road.
Traffic approaching the intersection of Route 643 and Route 646 from points south or west to reach Route 643 north will use the following detour:
- Continue east on Route 646 (Governor Darden Road);
- Left onto Route 641 (Sedley Road);
- Left onto Route 632 (Sycamore Avenue) and
- Left onto Route 643 (Darden Scout Road).
