COURTLAND – James Richard Kello IV, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 29, 2024 at Kello’s Boat Landing. Born in Franklin and raised in Courtland, he was the son of the late James Richard Kello III and Ruth Rowe Kello.
James was a 1969 graduate of Southampton High School and was a 1968 All Di
strict and All State football center. He was a former Virginia National Guardsman. James was the owner of Kello Electrical and Plumbing Contracting for 49 years and a member of Courtland United Methodist Church. He loved the Nottoway River, hunting, fishing, Paso Fino horses and training squirrel dogs.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 53 years, Betsey Barrett Kello; two sons, James Lee Kello and his wife, Michelle of Bridgewater and Jason Barrett Kello and partner, Joe of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Martha Kello and Nette K. Quidley, both of Courtland; three grandsons, Richard Henry Kello, John Thomas Kello and Layton James Kello; a niece, Elise Quidley and a nephew, Andy Barrett.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1 in Riverside Cemetery with Pastor James Wesley Edwards officiating. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Southampton Historical Society or the Virginia Outdoor Foundation, 39 Garrett Street, Warrenton, VA 20186.
