IWCS hosts regional fine arts conference

Isle of Wight County Schools hosted its first ever regional fine arts conference featuring teachers from IWCS, Suffolk and Surry County schools on Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The conference included professional learning sessions from 1:20-1:50 p.m. that included topics such as costume creation on the cheap, linking art to content classes, data in the fine arts classroom and best practices for elementary fine and performing arts classrooms. A second professional learning session ran from 3:10-3:40 p.m. including topics such as best practices for music classrooms, social media and professional learning for fine arts teachers, best practices for theatre and theatre games and improv for the classroom.
“This inaugural event featured a dynamic lineup of activities designed to enrich our educators’ skills and foster collaboration. The day included engaging roundtable discussions focused on addressing challenges and developing practical solutions for teaching in music, theater, and visual arts. Participants also benefited from a series of teacher-led sessions covering a range of topics, including effective practices in the music classroom, utilizing data in the fine arts, and more,” said Tiffany Truitt, instruction coordinator for secondary English, history and gifted and K-12 fine arts.“We were thrilled to have Brad McMurran from Push Comedy lead an inspiring improv session, demonstrating how improvisation can enhance creativity, design thinking, and collaboration.”
