Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia’s annual Powwow set for Sept. 21-22

The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia has announced the return of its annual Powwow, set to take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22, at the Nottoway Tribal Grounds in Surry at the Surry County Parks and Recreation Center, 205 Enos Farm Drive/Hwy 10 at Hwy 31. 

A tribal news release stated that this vibrant cultural event celebrates the rich heritage, traditions and contributions of the Nottoway people and welcomes visitors from all backgrounds to join in the festivities. 

The Powwow will feature a dynamic array of activities, including traditional Native American drumming, dancing and singing. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness authentic tribal ceremonies, experience a diverse range of Native American arts and crafts and enjoy delicious traditional foods. This family friendly event aims to educate the public about the Nottoway Tribe’s history and ongoing cultural practices while fostering a spirit of community and mutual respect. 

Chief Lynette Allston expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The annual Powwow is a time for us to come together to honor our ancestors, celebrate our living culture and share our traditions with the wider community. We are excited to welcome everyone to our tribal grounds for a weekend of learning, celebration and unity.” 

Highlights of the Powwow will include the following: 

  • Grand Entry ceremonies, featuring dancers in full regalia; 
  • Traditional dance competitions for all age groups; 
  • Storytelling sessions that delve into the rich history and legends of the Nottoway people; 
  • Craft vendors offering handmade jewelry, pottery, textiles and more; 
  • A variety of food vendors; and
  • the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Artmobile. 

Special featured guests will include the following: 

  • Master of Ceremonies: Rick Kelly, NITOVA Citizen; 
  • Head Dancers: Adrienne Harmon & Mike Harmon; 
  • Arena Director: Michael Nephew; and
  • Drums: Yapatoko & Red Clay. 

Other guest drums are welcomed.

The Nottoway Tribe of Virginia Powwow is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased at the gate. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the event ends at 5 p.m. on both days, with the Grand Entry scheduled for noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Parking is available on-site, and accommodations for people with disabilities are provided. Only service animals are allowed on site, no pets allowed. 

Tribal officials encouraged attendees not to forget to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the entire family to enjoy the Powwow.

There are separate Powwow ticket prices for general admission and for seniors and young people ages 13-17. Children ages 12 and younger are granted admission for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
