The Franklin High School varsity football team played its first home game of the season Friday, Sept. 13, and proved highly competitive in a back-and-forth contest against the Colonial Beach High School Drifters before ultimately falling 30-28 in overtime at Armory Field.
The first half ended with the Drifters up 12-8. The Broncos’ score came from senior running back Travis Mabry on a 54-yard touchdown run followed by a successful two-point conversion.
Mabry continued to score in the third quarter, with touchdown runs of 25 and 42 yards. Colonial Beach’s only score in the period came on a safety, and the quarter ended with the Broncos up 22-14.
The Drifters added a touchdown run and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
After winning the coin toss, the Broncos elected to have the first possession of overtime, starting at the Drifters’ 20-yard line. On a successful trick play, Broncos senior quarterback Altavis Turner walked untouched into the end zone for the first score. The Broncos’ attempt for a two-point conversion failed.
Next it was the Drifters’ turn on offense. They were successful in scoring on a pass play and on the two-point conversion attempt as well, sealing the win, 30-28.
Broncos Head Coach Lamont Hill commented afterward, “It was a tough game, and we made some mental mistakes.”
He added that they would be better prepared for future games.
Franklin (0-2) visits Essex High School (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.
