The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies responded to a crash involving two tractor-trailers on the westbound side of U.S. Route 58 near Drewry Road on Friday morning, Sept. 20. The crash resulted in serious injuries to both drivers, and one of them did not survive.
SCSO Maj. Camden Cobb stated that the drivers had been airlifted to area hospitals.
In an update provided Tuesday, Sept. 24, he said the deceased driver was identified as Wesley Isaiah Harrison James, 30, of Portsmouth.
“I do not know the current condition of the other driver, but I have not received a report of any worsening in their condition or of their passing,” he said Tuesday. “I will likely not receive any updates for that driver beyond this.”
On Friday, Cobb noted that the sheriff’s office received the call regarding the crash in Drewryville at 9:26 a.m. He said the crash involved one tractor-trailer rear-ending the other, but he noted that the cause of the collision was unknown and was under investigation.
“The sheriff’s office will be investigating,” he said Friday. “They are in the process of doing that now.”
In the Sept. 24 update, he said, “The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Initial investigation still shows that this was a rear-end collision of the two vehicles involved.”
All four lanes of U.S. Route 58 near Drewry Road were closed down Friday, but Cobb noted shortly before 11:45 a.m. that morning that one lane going each way had been reopened.
Responding to the scene in Drewryville were the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, Courtland Fire and Rescue, Capron Fire and Rescue, and Drewryville Volunteer Fire Department.
Cobb said the Virginia Department of Transportation and Virginia Department of Emergency Management were also called to the scene.
