Qualifying eighth graders in Franklin are invited to apply now for inclusion in the 2025-2026 schedule of classes at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS). Entry is not limited only to Franklin City Public School students. Those who are in either a private school or being homeschooled are also strongly encouraged to fill out an application.
Based in Peterburg, ARGS is dedicated to introducing its students to potential career opportunities in technology and the arts; the latter includes dance, music, theater, and the literary and visual arts. Eighth grade students currently enrolled in Algebra I or higher-level mathematics, or have maintained at least a B average for their seventh grade year, may apply.
“The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School offers a distinctive opportunity for students to grow and excel in their chosen fields alongside peers who share their interests. We invite all qualified students with a passion for the arts or technology to apply to ARGS,” said Ms. Latreesha Herring, the Gifted and Talented Education Specialist for Franklin City Public Schools.
Their parents or guardians have from Tuesday, Oct. 1 through Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, to fill out an application. These are being done online. For the link, go to https://applygovschool.schoolmint.com/login.
For more information, please contact Ms. Herring. She can be reached at 757-562-4631, Ext. 3224, or email lherring@fcpsva.org or awilliams@fcpsva.org.
The deadline for digital recommendations is Monday, Dec. 9.
An open house for interested students and parents will happen from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at ARGS, 512 W. Washington St., Peterburg, VA 23803.
Scheduled auditions and portfolios will happen on Saturdays Jan. 11 and 18, 2025.
The acceptance status will be announced on Friday, Feb. 28.
