Southampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 2, to a call regarding an unresponsive woman lying on Angelico Road in Capron who officials said appeared to have been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Thursday morning, Oct. 3, news release from SCSO noted that at about 2:01 p.m. on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office received a call about an unresponsive female lying on Angelico Road south of Southampton Parkway.

“Deputies responded and found the female in the roadway approximately one mile from the intersection of Cedar View Road,” SCSO Maj. Camden Cobb stated.

The female was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS at 2:27 p.m.

The release added that she had an injury that appeared to be consistent with a gun-shot wound.

“The victim was transported to the Tidewater Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk for an autopsy and for further attempts at identification,” Cobb stated.

In a Thursday afternoon update, the SCSO confirmed that the examiner was able to make a positive identification of the female victim. Her name is not being released at this time until notifications to her family can be made.

The Thursday morning release noted that Southampton detectives were investigating the incident and had been in communication with surrounding jurisdictions and the Southampton County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to share available information about the case.

“We would like to thank the Virginia State Police for resources they were able to provide during the investigation at the scene,” SCSO officials stated.
