King, Republican federal candidates lead big in Southampton

Eleven of 11 precincts are now reporting in Southampton County, with provisional and post-election ballots outstanding, and Natalie Dever King enjoys a significant lead in the race for an at-large seat on the Southampton County School Board, according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections website.
Republicans enjoy comfortable leads within the county in the federal-level races, and Newsoms may have elected a new mayor.
In the school board election, King has received 62.16% of the vote, with Sitrina B. Pope receiving 36.47%.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, King stated to her supporters, “I am honored to announce that with your support, I have been elected (unofficially) to serve on the Southampton School Board (at-large seat). This journey has been an incredible experience, and I am deeply grateful to each of you who believed in our mission to make Southampton County Public Schools a school system we all can be proud of.”
In the presidential race, Republican Party candidate Donald J. Trump has received 62.34% of the vote in Southampton County, with Democratic Party candidate Kamala D. Harris receiving 36.68%.
With 133 of 133 precincts reporting statewide, Harris leads Trump 51.57% to 46.36% in Virginia.
In the U.S. Senate race, Republican Hung Cao leads Democrat Timothy M. Kaine 59.82% to 40.08% in Southampton County.
With 133 of 133 precincts reporting statewide, Kaine leads Cao 54.04% to 45.78%.
In the race for the 2nd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican Jen A. Kiggans leads Democrat Missy Cotter Smasal 65.62% to 32.32% in Southampton County with seven out of seven relevant precincts reporting. Independent Robert E. Reid Jr. has 1.97% of the vote.
With eight of eight localities reporting across the 2nd District, Kiggans leads Smasal 50.94% to 46.79% districtwide.
In the race for the 4th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican William J. “Bill” Moher III leads Democrat Jennifer L. McClellan 56.22% to 43.72% in Southampton County with four of four relevant precincts reporting.
With 15 of 15 localities reporting across the 4th District, McClellan leads Moher 66.87% to 32.92%.
There were five seats available on the Boykins Town Council and seven candidates. With the relevant precinct reporting Tuesday evening, Linda Edwards Beatty led all vote recipients with 181, F.W. “Freddy” Felts received 147, Robert “Chet” Poland received 143, Janice B. Boone received 139, and Dee Modlin Clary received 125. Laura A. Parr was not far behind with 116 votes.
Boykins Town Clerk Victoria Edwards said there are not typically any provisional ballots to count in Boykins, but she noted that it is possible there could be some in this election.
In the Newsoms mayoral election, Stephanie Y. Ellsworth-Cofield leads Vanless D. “VD” Worrell 96-64. There were three write-in votes.
The proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot features the following question: Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended so that the tax exemption that is currently available to the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action is also available to the surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty?
With 11 of 11 precincts reporting in Southampton County, “Yes” received 93.76% of the vote.
With 129 of 133 precincts reporting statewide, “Yes” is winning with 93.09% of the vote.
