The Associated Press declared Republican Party candidate Donald J. Trump the winner of the 2024 presidential election early Wednesday morning, Nov. 6, after he cleared 270 electoral votes.
The AP wrote, “The win caps a historically tumultuous campaign that included two assassination attempts. Trump is the first person since Grover Cleveland to win non-consecutive presidential terms.”
The 45th and 47th presidents of the United States, Trump won in 2016 and then lost in 2020 before making in 2024 what the AP describes as “a remarkable political comeback rooted in appeal to frustrated voters.”
According to the AP as of 7:09 p.m. on Nov. 6, Trump had won 295 electoral votes compared to Democratic Party candidate Kamala D. Harris’ 226, and he had received 72,226,963 votes nationwide (50.9%) to Harris’ 67,464,324 votes (47.6%), with votes still being counted.
Though Trump won nationally, Harris carried Virginia. With 133 of 133 precincts reporting as of Wednesday evening according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections website, Harris led Trump 51.57% to 46.36%.

With three of 17 precincts still only partially reported in Isle of Wight County and with provisional and post-election ballots outstanding there, Trump received 59.58% of the vote to Harris’ 39.15%.
