Spirit of Moonpie and I spent Nov. 2-4 on the Nottoway below Delaware. The water was low, very clear, 62 degrees and had no flow from upriver. However, the wind tides were very strong. Air temps ranged from 41 to 70 degrees, and it was pretty darn breezy the first two days. Thank goodness the skeeters were not as bad this trip, and there were no cottonmouths in my camp. I saw no water quality issues but did remove one derelict limb line.
The fishing was pretty good again this trip. It was kind of hard to fish some lures because of all the leaves on the water. I wanted to fish topwater some because of the unusually warm water temp for this time of year, but it was just too aggravating. I played around a lot the first day trying the smallmouth, but only caught largemouth. Believe it or not I caught double largemouth on one lure again for the second trip in a row. These were only about a pound apiece this time, but on the same Rogue lure. I got pictures this time. I picked up JR the second afternoon, and we caught a few small bass and some chain pickerel. I hung a right nice fish but lost it again. That seems to be a recurring theme here recently. The wind was also terrible that afternoon. After JR left, I headed back toward base camp and stopped at a place I’m told is good for smallmouth. I started jigging the blade bait and got hung up pretty quickly. I grabbed my lure knocker to dislodge the lure that was hung up in about 15 feet of water. Got the lure unhung and reeled it up, and there was a red eye on the lure with the lure knocker… that was a first for me… catching a fish with the lure knocker attached!
So, it was a very nice trip again, very pleasant temps. I reckon that will end soon, but who knows these days with the way our crazy weather is on the two rivers we call the Nottoway and Blackwater.
