Both sides of the football field at Southampton High School were packed as the annual Backyard Brawl was played on Friday, Nov. 8, between the Franklin Broncos and Southampton Indians. Once again, the Indians claimed bragging rights as they completely dominated and shutout the Franklin 52-0.
The Indians wasted no time scoring, putting up 22 points in the early part of the first quarter, as Indian’s running back Javontae Lynch ran for three of his four touchdowns. Other Indians adding to the score were Zykiem Murrell and Xavier Tyler who both caught touchdown passes. Miquel Bradshaw also scored on a touchdown run.
In comments after the game, Indian head coach Travis Parker stated, ‘We are happy to win the backyard brawl as the players executed well and did it well all season. Now we are in the playoffs, which is a whole other season. We are happy to get out of this with no injuries and now we will get everybody ready for the playoffs. I give thanks to God and he is good to bless us to be in this predicament, 9-1 and that has been a while. We will be playing King William on Friday, Nov. 15, at home at 7 p.m.
Franklin High School head coach, Lamont Hill remarked, “Win or lose, I have to give the glory to God for putting us in this position to continue to lead these young men. We had a good week of practice, but we just couldn’t execute. We lost tonight to a very good team who are one of the top teams in division 2A. We did not step up tonight to meet the challenge. It didn’t work out well for us here tonight, but we still have a chance as we enter the playoffs on next Friday.”
Southampton enters the postseason as the No. 2 seed, in the VHSL Class 2 Region A bracket, and hosts No. 7 King William. Franklin enters as the Class 1 Region B sixth seed and will travel to Swoope to face Buffalo Gap. Both games are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m.
