FRANKLIN – Raymond Edward (Ed) Schwolow, 81, went softly into the night on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024 with his devoted wife by his side.
Ed was born in Camden, New Jersey on Jan. 3, 1943 to the late Raymond and Doris Schwolow. He grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey and graduated from Haddonfield High School where he was a member of the baseball team.
He matriculated to Rutgers University, playing on the freshman baseball team and participating in Air Force ROTC. Upon graduation from Rutgers in 1966 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. After a 12 year stint in the Air Force, mainly in the missile fields outside Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, Ed accepted a position at Union Camp Corporation in Franklin.
Ed had a 20+ year career as an electrical project engineer at Union Camp
where his door was always open to help younger engineers with any questions or concerns they had. He proudly voted “no” on the merger with IP and retired.
He was Past-President of the Franklin Lions Club and coached both of his sons in Y baseball leagues and continued to coach after they hung up their cleats.
In his spare time, he was the family genealogist and enjoyed helping others figure out their family tree. He also was a big supporter of Cypress Cove Country Club and thought of it as a treasured asset in our community.
Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and would do anything for anyone without expecting anything in return.
We can’t begin to thank the entire nursing staff, physical and occupational therapists, attending doctors, the emergency room staff, housekeeping staff, and food service staff enough at Southampton Memorial Hospital. The level of care he received on the second and third floors was amazing and our family will be forever grateful.
We would also like to thank Franklin Fire and Rescue/Hunterdale Volunteer Fire Department and their “lift assist” program for giving my mom and dad the peace of mind that there was help available each time they needed them.
And last but not least, in his final months, he was transferred to North Wing of East Pavilion. We can’t begin to adequately thank the entire nursing staff, the administrators, front door staff, the food service staff, the housekeeping staff and anyone else who kept my dad comfortable and cared for during his stay and always had a kind word or a smile for our family. We are forever indebted to you all.
Ed is survived by his wife of 58 years, Val; his sons, Karl and Jack; his two sisters, Pat (Charles) and Janet, along with his Aunt Billie. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, an “adopted” daughter and friends.
Per his request, there will be no services. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org or Franklin Cooperative Ministry 301 W. First Avenue, Franklin, VA 23851.
