Franklin City Public Schools formally announced in mid-December the launch of the Buy-a-Brick Campaign to support the renovation of the historic Charles Street Gymnasium in Franklin.

An FCPS news release noted that this iconic building, constructed between 1935 and 1936 with funds from a Public Works Administration grant and a loan from the Literary Fund of Virginia, has served the community for decades.

The Charles Street Gym, also known as the Franklin High School Gymnasium and Agricultural & Shop Building, was a vital resource for the city until 1966. Following the relocation of Franklin High School from Clay Street to Crescent Drive in 1967, the gym continued to play an important role in the community, hosting basketball games, weightlifting, wrestling and serving as the operations center for the Franklin High School Robotics Team.

“Despite its rich history, the gymnasium is currently vacant, and we believe it deserves a new lease on life,” FCPS officials stated.

The Buy-a-Brick Campaign invites community members and others to purchase inscribed bricks that will be placed on the sidewalk outside the gym.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to leave your mark on a cherished local landmark while contributing to its renovation,” officials stated.

For a donation, people can buy a brick to commemorate a loved one, celebrate a special occasion or simply show their support for the gym.

Each brick can be inscribed with the buyer’s chosen message, making it a unique tribute to the past and future of the Charles Street Gym.

“Your support is crucial in helping us restore this historical gym and ensure it continues to serve our community for generations to come,” officials stated.
