BOYKINS – Elizabeth “Betty” Bryant Kirkland, 88, went to live with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Dec. 30, 2024. Born in Suffolk on Jan. 11, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. “Bob” Hancock III and Lillian Pope Hancock. She was also predeceased by her husbands, Harry F. Bryant, Stephen F. Bryant, and O.W. “Mutt” Kirkland; two sisters, Ann H. Kellogg and Vivian H. Hall; and two brothers, Robert L. “Bobby” Hancock IV and Charles E. Hancock.

Betty was retired from Southampton County Department of Social Services. One of her most rewarding works was that of leading Courtland 4-H Garden Club during the years of 1995-1999. She was a member of Boykins Baptist Church.

As a child Betty walked often to visit sick and shut-ins with her Big Mama. As an adult she followed this path all of her days. She enjoyed gardening, especially raising plants from seeds. She planted seeds of God’s love everywhere she went.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Nancy B. Marks; her sons, Dennis and Larry Bryant; her grandchildren, Carly (Charlie), Alex, Keith (Kayla), Melanie and Ivey; her great-grandchildren, Dylan and Sheppard; her sister-in-law, Cathie H. Bradshaw; Stephen’s grandchildren, Tessa and Cassie; Mutt’s son, David Kirkland; Mutt’s granddaughter, Jessica and many special nieces, nephews and friends. She dearly loved each.

Per Betty’s wishes, services will be private and memorial donations can be made to Boykins Baptist Church, P.O. Box 316, Boykins, VA 23827 or Boykins Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 347, Boykins, VA 23827.
