Two-vehicle crash claims life of child

A two-vehicle crash occurred Friday afternoon, Jan. 3, on Southampton Parkway that claimed the life of a 1-year-old child.

A Southampton County Sheriff’s Office news release stated that on Jan. 3 at 2:17 p.m., the SCSO responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 5000 block of Southampton Parkway near Emporia. 

“The crash occurred in the westbound lanes when an SUV left the roadway and struck a tractor-trailer that had pulled off of the highway,” SCSO officials stated. 

The release noted that the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, and the driver and two juvenile passengers of the SUV were transported by ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries.  

“A one-year-old child in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene,” SCSO officials stated.

The release stated that the westbound lanes of Southampton Parkway were closed to traffic from approximately 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. when one lane was reopened. All lanes were reopened for traffic at approximately 7 p.m.

The release concluded by stating that the crash remains under investigation, and no charges had been sought as of Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 7.
