Southampton Academy offensive line credited for Raiders 35-16 victory

BLACKSTONE—Southampton Academy scored on a 75-yard pass in the second play of Friday night’s game against Kenston Forest and never looked back.
The Raiders defeated the Kavaliers 35-16 for its Virginia Commonwealth Conference opener. Southampton is 3-0 overall.
“We jumped out on them early,” said Raiders Head Coach Dale Marks. “We scored three touchdowns in the first quarter. Our offensive line did an excellent job.”
Southampton Academy earned a total of 503 yards on offense to Kenton Forest’s 176 yards. The Raiders rushed for 338 yards on 50 carries, while the Kavaliers got 48 yards on 16 carries.
Senior John Hinkle led the Raiders with 16 carries for 142 yards.
Southampton completed 5 of 8 passes for 165 yards, while Kenston Forest went 12 for 30 for 128 yards. The Raiders had four penalties for 45 yards.
Also leading the Raiders was sophomore Rashodd Maxey, who with 11:05 left in the first quarter, caught the 75-yard pass from junior quarterback Wesley Barnes. Maxey scored another touchdown on a 44-yard run. He kicked three extra points.
Senior David Bogese scored two touchdowns, including one on a 19-yard pass from Barnes.
Southampton led 21-0 at the half and 28-9 at the end of the third.
Bogese scored the second touchdown with 4:36 left in the first quarter on a 6-yard run. He ran in for the 2-point conversion.
Junior Raider Carson Camp scored the third, first-quarter touchdown on a 48-yard pass from Barnes.
The Kavaliers opened the third quarter with a 34-yard field goal by Max Antwerpas with 10:00 left.
Maxey responded with the 44-yard touchdown run with 8:47 left in the third quarter.
With 2:22 left on the clock for the quarter, Kavalier quarterback Ford Scott connected with Brady Deal on a 61-yard pass. The kick failed.
In the fourth quarter, Barnes completed a 19-yard pass to Bogese with 11:10 left.
Kenston Forest scored the final touchdown on a 10-yard run by Brandon Southworth with 7:57 left.
Southampton Academy travels to Fuqua School for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Sept.17.
