FRANKLIN—St. Patrick’s Day may have been Wednesday, but volunteers are hoping that people will still be in the spirit of the holiday to help fight childhood cancer Saturday night.
That’s when organizers are holding St. Baldrick’s Day at Fred’s Restaurant in downtown Franklin. Volunteers, sponsored by relatives, friends and others, will shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer.
“It’s not really shaving with a razor,” organizer Scott Seddon pointed out. He said volunteers will be “shaved” with clippers. Even Fred’s owner David Rabil is willing to shave his mustache and head for $100 and $500 donations, respectively, Seddon said.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research, according to the organization’s Web site. Since 2000, the organization has raised more than $74 million and more than 130,000 volunteers have shaved their heads.
It’s the second year for the event at Fred’s. Last year’s inaugural event was in memory of Franklin native Casy Rich, who died in 2008.
Seddon said the majority of the money collected at St. Baldrick’s events goes directly to cancer research.
“They don’t have big overhead like some other charities,” he said.
Seddon said you don’t have to be willing to go bald to participate in Saturday’s festivities.
“We have live music and a DJ,” he said. “All we’re asking is donations at the door and donate to your favorite shavee.”
Aesthetics by Naomi and Bucks and Does Salon & Spa will provide shaving services.
A number of local businesses, particularly in the downtown area, also sponsor the event, Seddon said.
The St. Baldrick’s Day event starts at 7 p.m.
