Dealing with road construction is never fun, but the results are usually well worth it.

Franklin Public Works Director Russ Pace has asked motorists to be patient when paving of the city’s busiest road — Armory Drive — begins on Monday, Aug. 16.

The $467,000 project shared by the city and Virginia Department of Transportation will start where Armory Drive intersects with College Drive and head west to the city limits to the Route 58 bypass.

Work on the approximate 1.2-mile project is expected to take about one month.

Pace warned that travel will be “messy” and to expect delays. There will be times when driveways may be blocked, but not for more than an hour.

We, the motoring public, will for the most part get the better end of the deal. Although we will be stuck in traffic at times, for most of us, we will be sitting in our air-conditioned vehicles.

From inside those vehicles we will be watching workers from Rose Brothers Paving of Ahoskie, N.C., sweating in the August heat while working with 150-degree asphalt. We also will be nice and cool while flagmen bake in the sun, directing motorists.

Workers will no doubt see the faces of impatient motorists inside their air-conditioned cars. Give them a break and maybe a smile.

On a side note, work will be done between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. So if you’re really bothered by backed-up traffic, avoid Armory Drive during these times.
