COURTLAND—Organizers are hard at work preparing for Southampton Academy’s annual Antiques Show and Sale, which is set for March 5, 6, and 7 at the school.

“This is actually the 40th anniversary of the show, and we’ve added a new twist this year, which is artwork,” said Mandy Crumpler, who, along with Mary Dilday and Courtney Applewhite, is co-chairing the event.

Crumpler said the show is still going to have all types of antiques, but will also feature some local artists and their work, including oil paintings and ceramics. Assorted plants will also be on sale.

Students are getting in on the fun by helping design gift baskets that will be sold through silent auction throughout the weekend. Every homeroom was responsible for coming up with a theme for a basket and filling it. Themes include the University of Virginia, backyard grilling and NASCAR. Crumpler said the NASCAR basket has four tickets to a race at Richmond International Raceway.

Artwork isn’t the only new addition to the show this year — Raider Reruns will also debut this year.

“It’s a consignment shop that’s going to feature furniture, home decor and artwork that has been donated to us from friends and family of Southampton Academy, and we’re going to sell it and all the profits will go to the school,” Crumpler said.

The event is hosted by Southampton Academy’s Parent-Teacher Organization and is its largest fundraiser of the year.

“Our PTO’s main objective is to supplement resources within the classroom,” Crumpler said. Funding from the PTO recently paid for new equipment for the high school science lab, cultural programs at the school, homecoming, field day, skating parties for the lower school, the honors banquet, new library resources and reading programs and assessments.

The sale will take place at the Camp Ballard Gymnasium. Admission tickets are $5. Children 5 and younger are admitted free. Students may enter for $1 each. Hours on Friday are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“It’s a unique shopping experience, we’re going to have unique antiques and art and we’re also going to have the same delicious food we have every year — it’s all homemade,” Crumpler said. “We’re really excited.”
