The Franklin boys’ basketball team is peaking at the right time.

The Broncos got through a five-game week with four wins, including a 60-52 victory over Surry County in the finals of the Tri-Rivers District basketball tournament Saturday night.

With Saturday night’s win, the Broncos actually earned themselves some rest. By beating Surry, Franklin ended up second in the region and will have a bye in the first round of the Group A, Region A, Division 1 playoffs. Franklin will host a semifinal game Friday night against either West Point or Rappahannock.

“It’s awesome. The bottom line is we are peaking right now. We got a good win at home Monday (against Surry) and this was a great win at their place,” said Danny Dillon, Franklin head coach.

Dillon relied on his starting five for much of Saturday night’s win, including a 23-point performance by Justin Grant.

“Right now, I’m basically seven players. It’s kind of how it shakes out. We had five games this week. If this is a test, we passed it,” he said.

Franklin led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 31-30 at the half. But Surry came through with a second-half surge and took a 44-41 lead at the end of the third period. Franklin went nearly four minutes in the third quarter without scoring a point.

The Broncos took the lead for good right at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Grant picked off a Surry pass and went in for a layup. After another steal by Denzel Smith, Grant scored on another layup to put the Broncos up 45-44 at the 6:10 mark.

The game stayed tight until under a minute to play. With 44 seconds left in the contest, Trey Kigler went inside for a bucket and also connected on a free throw after he was fouled to put Franklin up 57-50. With 21 second to play, Grant sank two free throws to up the Franklin lead to 59-50.

The Bronco offense was also led by Franti Urquhart with 17 points and Deshawn Lassiter with 11 points.

For Surry, Reginald Diggs led with 16 points and William Lawrence chipped in 13 points.
