SHS soccer team defeats Greensville 9-1

GREENSVILLE—Ahead by two at the half, the Southampton High School soccer team held on for a 9-1 Southside District win over host Greensville on Monday.

For the Indians, Johnny Tribbett scored two first-half goals and Aaron Turner added another before Greensville scored with about two minutes left.

In the second half, Tribbett scored again. Jannes Bergmann had a goal and two assists. Travis Griffin and Alex Dunlow each had a goal and an assist. Franck LeMat and Jeffrey Vincent each had a goal.

Daniel Kirk, Kevin Watford, Enoch Westover and Billy Birdsong each had an assist.

Starting goalie David Strozier saved two shots in the first half.

“It was a good performance in which we possessed the ball for most of the match,” said SHS Coach Scott Edwards. “We had 32 shots and only allowed three shots by Greensville. We got some people healthy over spring break and we look ready for district play.

In junior varsity action, Southampton won 6-0. Gavin Thompson led with three goals and an assist. Mary Hudgins, Timothy Mason, and Clayton Turner each had one goal. Jamal Hurt had an assist. Goalie Brian Cooke saved 3 shots.
