WINDSOR—The top-ranked Region A Windsor High School volleyball team won Saturday’s Tri-Rivers District tournament.

The Lady Dukes, who were 16-4 overall this season and 8-0 in the district, advanced to the Region A Tournament, which they will host as long as they continue to win. The first game will be played at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at Windsor High School.

The Lady Dukes will play either Essex or Middlesex.

“Both are good,” said Windsor Volleyball Coach Jeff Burchette. “Middlesex plays in the same district as Matthews, which is probably the strongest district in the region. Essex is typically a good team and well coached.”

After Saturday’s district tournament, Burchette was named the district’s Coach of the Year, and senior Tiffany Rapp was named the district’s Player of the Year for a second year in a row.

“I thought she was very deserving,” Burchette said. “I’m very happy for her. She’s a good player, she’s consistent and she’s one our better hitters, blockers and servers. She’s been pretty dominant in the district for the last three years.”

As for being named Coach of the Year, Burchette credited the girls.

“You have to have good players to win awards such as that,” he said.

Windsor players named to the All-Academic team were Rapp, Taylor Gay, MacKenzie Allen, Brittany Oliver, Brittany Stephens and Lauren Arrington; First Team All-District were Rapp, Gay, Allen and Lyndee Spencer; Second Team All-District were Oliver and Arrington; and Honorable Mention were Stephens and Felisha Holcomb.

Top-seeded Windsor opened the district tournament against fourth-seeded Surry. The Lady Dukes won in three sets with scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-7. The Lady Dukes then defeated Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 25-9, 25-16, 25-18.

For the tournament, Allen had 8 kills, 2 blocks and 6 aces; Rapp made 9 kills, 5 blocks and 9 aces; Gay had 12 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces; Spencer made 36 assists; Arrington had 12 aces; and Oliver made 8 aces.
