IVOR—Officials at 1 p.m. Wednesday captured a man who one day earlier led authorities on a 40-mile chase at speeds of up to 85 miles per hour, said Major Gene Drewery with the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found Kevin Hargrave, 35, at a home in the 10000 block of New Road near Ivor.

A deputy spotted Hargrave at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in a vehicle on Booth Road in the Ivor area and knew he was wanted on felony probation warrants for burglary and larceny charges in Suffolk, Drewery said.

“The deputy attempted to stop him and he wouldn’t stop,” Drewery said.

The chased on mostly backgrounds continued onto Sadler and Crumpler roads, crossed into Isle of Wight, Surry and Sussex counties, and back into Surry County. During that time, Hargrave allegedly drove through a field before bailing from the small green Ford along a power line in Surry County near Mt. Ray Road.

“The deputy saw him jump out of the vehicle and run into the woods,” Drewery said. “They followed him into the woods and had tracking dogs, and found where it appeared he got into a vehicle.”

It’s believed Hargrave called someone for a ride.

Police called off the search at 6:20 p.m.

Hargrave also faces felony eluding charges and driving under suspension, Drewery said.
