COURTLAND—A Chesapeake man awaiting sentencing on 25 felony charges in that city was denied bond for allegedly violating his probation in Southampton County Circuit Court Thursday.
Linwood Eugene Turner Sr. pleaded guilty in September to charges of obtaining money by false pretense, forging and uttering in Chesapeake Circuit Court. The charges stemmed from Turner’s alleged fraudulent sale of land across Western Tidewater that he didn’t own.
Chesapeake police arrested Turner in March after they said about a dozen people had been tricked out of at least $100,000 in fake land deals across the area, including Isle of Wight and Southampton counties.
Turner was in Southampton County Circuit for allegedly violating his probation on charges of petty larceny, bad check writing and fraud.
Southampton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Eric Cooke said Turner has “been victimizing people since at least 1989,” before reading off a list of convictions from various courts.
“He continues to victimize people while he’s on probation,” Cooke said.
Turner’s attorney argued he should be granted bond because he had been making restitution payments and didn’t pose a flight risk. Turner testified that he wanted bond so he could continue to work and pay restitution to the victims in the Chesapeake cases.
“I don’t believe a thing Mr. Turner says,” Judge Westbrook Parker said, before denying bond.
Turner will be sentenced in January on the Chesapeake charges.
