CARRSVILLE—Two days after a Carrsville woman was founded murdered in her home and a second person was found dead on the same property, neighbors to Sandra and Joe Joyner remained mystified about what happened.

“What bothers me is they won’t say it’s Joe,” said Annie Watson, who lives near the Joyners. “They need to put a name (to the dead person) for the neighbors.”

Police on Friday found Sandra Joyner, 58, dead in her home at 31334 Walters Highway from blunt force trauma. An autopsy indicated the Southampton Memorial Hospital nurse was murdered. Police later that evening found a second person about 100 yards behind the home in a wooded area. The death was due to blunt force trauma, and it’s being investigated as a homicide.

Joyner’s husband, Joe, is still considered missing, Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Capt. Rick Gaddis said Sunday, but indicated Saturday that the second person found appeared to be a man. The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office. Gaddis said investigators hope to release the identity of the second person on Monday.

A number of the Joyners’ neighbors didn’t want to be interviewed Sunday. For some, the idea of what appears to be two violent murders has left them baffled. They also assume the second person is Joe Joyner.

“The oddest thing is that his truck is parked at the garage,” said Watson, who has lived in the neighborhood for nine years.

She spoke highly of Joe Joyner.

“He’s the vegetable man,” Watson said. “Everybody bought from him.”

She said he regularly takes vegetables to the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Franklin.

“He would make sales there,” Watson said. “Joe knows so many people.”

The Sheriff’s Office received a call at 11:30 a.m. Friday to the check on the couple. Sandra Joyner had failed to show to work and a relative expressed concern.

When deputies arrived at the Joyners’ locked home, a relative let them in. They found Sandra Joyner dead in a back room with blood around her, and her husband was missing.

Police as of Sunday had not made an arrest, but were pursuing.

The last time the couple was seen was by a relative on Thursday night at the Joyners’ home.
