During a time of economic strain and transition for our community and many of its citizens, we are encouraged to see outward signs that the Lord’s work is flourishing.

* Courtland Baptist Church, a growing congregation that was busting at the seams in its former building, recently dedicated a beautiful new sanctuary.

* True Word Christian Church, after humble origins in a Carrsville Highway strip mall, will worship for the first time this weekend at its new facility on General Thomas Highway.

* High Street United Methodist Church has begun construction of new facilities on Camp Parkway adjacent to Riverdale Elementary School. To its credit, the congregation encouraged the builder to hire local workers and subcontractors, thereby maximizing the economic benefits of the construction project.

A strong, vibrant faith community is an essential component of a healthy overall community. Churches not only strengthen their own members and contribute to overall quality of life in the community; they reach out to non-members who need charity and encouragement.

In times of economic crisis, the role of the church becomes even more important. A strong foundation of faith can sustain a community and its citizens during the most trying of circumstances.

The essential Christian message of hope — for a better life here on earth and for eternal life beyond — is needed now more than ever. It’s great to see our area churches going strong.
