Mildred Doughty of Franklin on April 30 celebrated her 80th reunion at The College of William & Mary.

Mildred is the only person in the history of the college to attend an 80th reunion. She knows all the words to her alma mater, which is amazing since she will be 102 on June 16.

When Mildred turned 100, she still had a valid driver’s license and a car. At 96, she gave up driving. The state of Virginia gave her a driver’s license for five years at age 95.

Mildred moved from her Franklin apartment to the Village at Woods Edge 5½ years ago at the recommendation of her doctor. She didn’t feel she was ready for an assisted living center.

Mildred is the mother of Linda Mahoney, Carolyn Chio, Gwynn Doughty and Elaine Burkhart.

• Joe Tennis of Bristol is preparing to unveil a book about “Franklin.”

It’s a unique children’s book called “Finding Franklin — Mystery of the Lost State Capitol.” It is set in towns named Franklin in Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina.

Joe will have a book-signing beginning after 9 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Peanut Patch in Courtland.

He says the book, in some ways, is a follow-up to his “Beach to Bluegrass” book that also featured Franklin.

• Susan Joyner, Barbette Porter and Bonnie Lansing of Southampton Social Services were recently recognized during an event that marked the 20th anniversary of the Virginia Benefit Programs Organization.

Attending a meeting in Virginia Beach, the trio received plaques for their contributions to the organization, which promotes family-based assistance through the Department of Social Services.
