FRANKLIN—Five residents, including all three eligible incumbents, were nominated Monday to fill five seats on the Franklin School Board.

Cindy Fillhart was nominated for the three-year term from Ward 6 to replace board Chairman Bill Scarboro, who was ineligible for reappointment because he has reached the limit of three consecutive terms.

Fillhart has an elementary education degree from Virginia Wesleyan. She has lived in Franklin for five years and has seven children, four of whom attend S.P. Morton Elementary School, said former School Board member David Benton, who nominated her.

Sherita Parker was nominated for a three-year term in the Ward 4 seat to replace outgoing board Vice Chairwoman Mona Murphy, who won the Ward 4 City Council seat during the May 1 elections.

Parker is a 1999 graduate of Franklin High School who majored in English at Norfolk State University. She works as a nurse at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, said resident Effie King, who nominated her.

These two new nominees will have to go through an interview process before the appointments are made, said City Manager Randy Martin.

Incumbents Will Councill from Ward 1, Glenn Hopkins from Ward 2 and Edna King, at-large, were each nominated again with no opposition.
