The kindness of people can be amazing.
Last week, the Rev. Dr. Calvin Durham with New Hope Church of God in Christ in Norfolk said that he and parishioners would be in Franklin from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, distributing new toys, household and gift items, and food for Christmas to 500 residents.
The third annual giveaway will be held Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 683 Oak St., Franklin.
The church accumulates a lot over the year from merchants because it runs several missions, including a homeless shelter and soup kitchen. There’s too much for New Hope to use.
Durham’s church adopted Franklin a few years back after seeing a need. That need has grown with the closing of International Paper earlier this year, eliminating 1,100 jobs.
We would assume there has to be a similar need in Norfolk. For New Hope to choose us is quite commendable. It has to make the folks in Franklin feel appreciated. And we hope the folks in Franklin appreciate New Hope’s efforts.
Like Durham said, “I believe if the church is not helping the community, than the church is not being a church.”
