ISLE OF WIGHT—The committee tasked with reviewing Isle of Wight County Schools’ grading scale will give its report to the School Board Thursday.

In August, the School Board voted unanimously to direct Superintendent Dr. Michael McPherson to form a committee to study the school division’s grading scale after a number of parents voiced support for a 10-point scale at School Board meetings.

Under the county’s current grading scale, a grade of 94 to 100 is an A; 86 to 93 is a B; 78-85 is a C; and 70-77 is a D.

Some parents have argued the school district’s grading scale places students at a disadvantage for college admissions and scholarships and even presented a petition to the School Board in support of a change.

The School Board is also expected to appoint a new Carrsville District representative Thursday. Ben Rideout, Tim Bradshaw and Robert Eley applied to replace Kenneth Bunch, who resigned and was appointed to the Board of Supervisors.

Board Chairman David Goodrich said the board would meet in closed session Thursday to discuss the nominees and hopefully appoint a member, who would then be able to participate in the meeting.
