FRANKLIN—Cindy Fillhart gave up the chance to teach elementary school for a possible appointment to the Franklin School Board.

Fillhart is interested in the three-year Ward 6 term to help the school system.

“I applied for a job at S.P. Morton, but I thought I could be a greater help as a member of the school board,” Fillhart said. “The board can help all the schools.”

Last year, the board voted to reverse a policy by school administrators to give no grade lower than a 60 on tests and assignments.

Fillhart understands both sides of that issue.

“I can see how it can save the student,” Fillhart said.

An analysis commissioned by The Tidewater News found that 75 percent of students in Franklin schools passed required standardized tests known as Standards of Learning. Fillhart believes test scores have to improve, noting that with seven children, she has a lot invested in the school system.

“I want all the students to succeed because when they succeed we all succeed,” Fillhart said.

If appointed, she will replace Bill Scarboro, who has served the maximum nine years.

Fillhart believes more residents should’ve applied for board positions.

“I hope to set an example,” she said. “It would be nice to see more people come out and try.”

Fillhart along with Ward 4 nominee Sherita Parker and incumbents Edna King, at-large; Will Councill in Ward 1; and Glenn Hopkins were nominated for five seats during a public hearing on May 14.

Fillhart will be interviewed by the City Council at 7 p.m. today, May 30, at City Hall. The meeting is closed to the public. The council is expected to appoint the new members during a June meeting.
