A look at Southampton, Tidewater basketball seasons

COURTLAND—The Southampton High School boys’ basketball team is looking to make a run for the Southside District title this season.

The Indians, who were 12-7 last season and were eliminated in the first round of the regional tournament, lost seven seniors to graduation.

Key returning players for the Indians are juniors Nick Doyle and Jalen Ford and senior Josh Johnson. Doyle was First Team All-Southside District last season and Ford was Honorable Mention.

The Indians’ key newcomers are juniors Karon Evans and Jay ’R McCain and sophomore Tonee Hill.

Other players are seniors Alex Cole, Darien Taylor and Michael Hastings; and juniors De’Von Peterson, Michael Frazier, Tyshawn Jackson and Ashton Artis.

The toughest teams on the Indians’ schedule are Brunswick, Greensville and Franklin high schools.

Tidewater Academy

WAKEFIELD—The Tidewater Academy girls’ basketball team is off to a 2-2 start under first-year head coach Charles Savedge.

The Lady Warriors’ returning key players are senior Samantha Spain; sophomores Sarah Savedge, Falon Williams and Carrie Beahm; and freshman Samantha Dunn. Other team members are senior Haley Taylor; freshmen Hannah Taylor and Garrett Montgomery; and eighth-grader Taylor Pruitt.

The Lady Warriors will host the Tidewater Academy Christmas Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28. Teams will include Tidewater Academy, Stonebridge School, Greenbrier Christian Academy and Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.
