Motorists are likely to encounter black ice on the roads of Western Tidewater tonight, the National Weather Service said.
Abundant sunshine Monday afternoon combined with temperatures into the lower 40s caused significant melting of the foot of snow that fell on the region Saturday night and Sunday.
Most primary roads have dried. Many secondary roads, however, still have snow, ice and residual moisture. Temperatures will quickly fall below freezing after sunset, setting up favorable conditions for black ice.
Motorists should be alert to the possibility of slick spots. What may appear to be a wet patch of pavement could actually be a thin layer of ice.
Drivers should begin to brake or slow down sooner than normal and allow extra time to reach their destination.
Isle of Wight County announced this afternoon that government offices will open three hours later than normal Tuesday morning.
