Ruth Barnes Porter departed this life peacefully to gain a new life on Saturday, December 18, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, N.C.

Mrs. Porter was born on October 30, 1918, in Franklin, Virginia, to the late George and Martha Barnes.

Mrs. Porter attended grade school in Southampton County.

Mrs. Porter retired from Bracey Cleaners.

Mrs. Porter was a lifetime member of The White Oak Spring Baptist Church, where she served as an usher for many years.

Mrs. Porter was united into holy matrimony to Jim Porter, and to this union, three children were born and one was reared.

Six siblings predeceased her and one who took the journey with her, Betty “Verl” Whitehead.

Mrs. Porter leaves to cherish her life two daughters Virginia L. Parker of Fayetteville, N.C., and Dorothy Porter of Freeport, New York; a son Percell Porter of New Bronx, New York; a grandson she reared, Percell Porter Jr. (Brenda) of Franklin, Virginia; Maimie Chavis of Franklin, Virginia; Bill Ryland and George Ryland, both of Franklin, Virginia; five sisters, Louise Joyner of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Thelma Stith (Warren) and Frances Flowers (Eugene), both of New York, and Lois Barnes and Marie Scott (Herbert), both of Franklin, Virginia.; two brothers Wesley Barnes (Lula) of Franklin, Virginia, and Richard Barnes (Shirley)of Henderson, N.C.; two additional sisters-in-law, Barbara Barnes and Mary Barnes, both of Franklin, Virginia; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 28, 2010, in the White Oak Spring Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Lee eulogistic and the Rev. Curtis Mitchell and The Rev. Anthony Ferebee officiating.

Professional services were provided by Rountree Family Mortuary & Cremation.
