WAVERLY—An unidentified man walking in the middle of Route 460 in Waverly was killed after he jumped in front of a tractor-trailer driven by a North Carolina man at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Virginia State Police said.

Moments later, the driver of a second vehicle traveling in the opposite direction ran over the man, but did not stop, police said.

The victim — only described as a black man — had no identification so family could not be notified for police to release his name. It could take days before he is identified, police said.

Trucker Ronnie Ford of Rocky Mount was eastbound near Route 614 when he saw the man on the road, police said. Ford swerved into the opposite lane to miss him and the victim jumped in front of his rig.

Ford was wearing his seat belt and alcohol was not a factor, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
