Colts win doubleheader

HOPEWELL—The Waverly/Wakefield Colts defeated Hopewell 5-0 and 10-0 in a doubleheader at Hopewell High School on Wednesday.

“Our defense was stellar through both games, the first game ending with a double play,” said Coach Rick Dagenais. “We are looking for three Appomattox River district titles in a row.”

In game one, Dillon Hasty pitched a two-hit, shutout and Brynner Porter pitched a scoreless final inning for the team of 15- and 16-year-olds, which includes boys from Southampton, Surry and Sussex Central high schools, and Southampton and Tidewater academies.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Wakefield/Waverly scored five runs.

Sean Raulston was 2-for-3 with a triple, knocking in two runs in the final inning.

In the second game, the Colts scored five runs in the second inning and three in the third. A Jake Pope triple in the fourth resulted in two runs and an early end to the game.

Porter pitched the complete game for the win.

On the night, Pope went 3-for-4 with two triples, had 4 RBIs and scored two runs; Jack Bunn was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI; and Kyle Hooper reached base three times and scored two runs.

Other players are Dylan Beale, Hunter Buhls, Will Dagenais, Benji Goodrich, Darius Griffin, Payton Holdsworth, Reid Holdsworth, Jacob Holland, Triston Holland, Dillon Matthews, Daniel McKenney, Charlie Webb, Mike Webb and Nate Williams.

The Colts on Monday, June 25, will travel to Matoaca High School in Matoaca and Wednesday, June 27, will go to Prince George High School. The games begin at 6 p.m.
