COURTLAND—To make up two snow days, students at Southampton Academy can expect longer school days for the rest of the year.

“We just added minutes to the days until the end of the second semester,” said Headmaster Mercer Neal.

Extending the days is one of the ways area school districts will make up days from Dec. 16 and 17, when 2 inches of snow fell in the area.

Neal estimates students will be in school for an extra 10 to 15 minutes a day.

“I’m hoping not to add more on later,” he said.

FRANKLIN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

In Franklin Public Schools, the days will not be made up.

“As of right now, we have enough time in our calendar to cover those two days,” a school spokeswoman said. “If we should have another day missed due to inclement weather or something, it might be done with extra time during each school day.”

The school district includes extra days in its calendar for snow days.

“So if you miss a day or two, you’re covered.”

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY SCHOOLS

Isle of Wight County Schools has canceled early dismissals scheduled for exams on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 27 and Jan. 28, said Katherine Goff, public information officer for the district. All students will be dismissed at their regular times on those days.

“At this time, no other make-up days have been scheduled,” Goff said. “However, in the event of a future delay, unscheduled early release or school closing, additional changes may be made to the calendar.”

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Southampton County Public School Board on Monday night voted to make up the days on Monday, Jan. 31, and Tuesday, Feb. 1. Both days had been scheduled as professional days, which would’ve meant no school for students.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, will be a professional day, and the second semester will begin Thursday, Feb. 3.

ISLE OF WIGHT ACADEMY

At Isle of Wight Academy, two extra days are built into the academic calendar.

“So we’re OK unless it snows again,” said Headmaster Benjamin Vaughan.

Should the school have another snow day, it would be made up during a break or the school year would be extended by a day, Vaughan said.

As for two-hour delays, there’s no need to make those up “as long as we come to school,” he said.

TIDEWATER ACADEMY

Secretary Stephanie Bussenger said she did not know if a decision was made to either make up the days or not.

“Sometimes we have days built into our schedule so no decision has been made at this time,” Bussenger said.
