FRANKLIN—Chartway Federal Credit Union on Saturday will close its branch inside Farm Fresh on Armory Drive in Franklin.
“We took a look at operations at our 46 locations and really felt like we could serve the needs of that market with online and mobile banking services,” said Kim Little, regional president of Chartway in Virginia Beach.
Chartway will leave a cash machine inside the store.
“Our customers and community will still have access to cash,” Little said. “We also have six nearby credit union service centers.”
Three are in Suffolk, two in Portsmouth and one in Chesapeake.
The credit union has one full-time and two part-time employees. All have been transferred to other branches, Little said.
“Interestingly enough, with our solid partnership with Farm Fresh, they were offered opportunities with Farm Fresh,” she said.
“We kind of have a win-win,” Little added. “We really do feel we can continue to serve the needs of that market. We have a really robust mobile banking program and online banking program and a 24/7 call center. In this day and age of technology, a physical location isn’t necessary.”
Little oversees the operation of 46 branches, including 15 located inside Farm Fresh stores.
The manager from the Farm Fresh in Franklin did not want to comment when asked if he knew of another bank that might move into the store.
The Farm Fresh company spokesman could not be reached.
Based in Virginia Beach, Chartway has been serving members since 1959 and has 64 branches in 10 states.
