Virginia Norfleet received the Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award from Isle of Wight County Windsor District Supervisor Delores “Dee Dee” Darden.
Virginia dedicates her time to her church, Windsor Woman’s Club, Western Tidewater Free Clinic, and founded and manages Meals on Wheels for the Windsor area.
• Got a visit on Wednesday from Jim Steil, coordinator for the Western Tidewater Health District Medical Reserve Corps.
Jim is looking for volunteers with or without medical backgrounds to assist with emergencies. A bank of volunteers could make for a smoother transition when dealing with public emergencies such as floods, tornadoes and hurricanes.
On the medical side, he is looking for doctors, physician assistants, pharmacy technicians, nurses and certified nurse aides.
On the non-medical side, people are needed to help set up shelters, assist with vaccination clinics and other duties.
If interested, call Jim at 757-514-1443. To find out more, go to www.vdh.virginia.gov/mrc/wtmrc/index.htm.
• Winners of the pitching contest during Baseball Night at the Ruth Camp Campbell Memorial library were Layla Battle for youth up to age 5, John Butler for 6- to 12-year-olds and Ashley Haydu for youth 12 and older.
Rip Tide, the mascot for the Tides baseball team in Norfolk, visited the library for this Summer Reading Program. He autographed baseballs and gave out prizes. Participants had hot dogs, snow cones and popcorn.
Also at the library for another reading program, Lara and Jay Templin presented the program “Dream Big, Dig Deep.” They taught youth about archaeology and how artifacts tell us about people who lived in the past.
Participants went on a mock dig to see how archaeologists interpret the hidden language of artifacts. They also learned what to do if they find an artifact, how a dig site is prepared and what kind of tools archeologists use, including some as simple as a toothbrush.
