PRINCE GEORGE—Mike Webb’s home run and Jacob Holland’s three doubles led Wakefield/Waverly to an 8-6 win over Prince George on Wednesday and qualified the Colts for the winners’ bracket in the double elimination Appomattox River District Tournament.

The first game will be played at 6 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Prince George.

Webb and Danny McKenney each scored in the first inning, and Holland and Charlie Webb each plated a run in the second before Mike Webb’s blast over the left-field fence in the third inning.

McKenney and Mike Webb each had two RBIs. Holland, Charlie Webb, Dylan Beale and Nate Williams each added one.

From behind the plate, McKenney threw out two runners trying to steal bases and tagged out a runner at home on a ball thrown by Jake Pope from center field in the fourth inning.

Holland, Mike Webb, Hasty and Peyton Holdsworth pitched for Wakefield with Holdsworth getting the win. Holland and Webb each eliminated runners with pick-off moves.

Prince George rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

In action from Monday, the Colts, which includes 15- to 16-year-olds from Southampton, Surry and Sussex Central high schools, and Southampton and Tidewater academies, scored eight runs in the first inning before defeating Hopewell 13-2 in the opening round of the tournament.

The Colts sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning and 11 in the fourth inning for five more runs.

Hasty led the attack with two triples and three RBIs. Beale added three RBIs and Pope had two.

The pitching of Brynner Porter, Kyle Hooper and Hasty limited Hopewell to two singles, while striking out nine.

To close out the regular season, the Colts swept a doubleheader with two no-hitters against Colonial Heights on July 13.

In the first game, three pitchers combined for the no-hitter and a 12-1 win. Porter got the win. Will Dagenais and Mike Webb also pitched.

Colonial Heights’ lone run came as a result of an error in the third inning.

Beale and Mike Webb each scored three times; Triston Holland had three RBIs and Dagenais added two RBIs.

In game two, Jake Holland and Hasty combined to strike out 11 of the 17 batters for a 3-0 win. Pope, Williams and Triston Holland each scored for Wakefield, which finished the regular season at 7-3.
