Woman offers to shave head

DREWRYVILLE—For a fourth year in a row, Lindsay Barnes will participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk for breast cancer awareness.
Concerned about raising the required $2,300 to participate in the 60-mile walk from Oct. 19-21 in Atlanta, Barnes is offering to shave her head if she reaches her goal.
“The decision to shave my head was not made lightly,” said the 29-year-old mother of four. “I thought about not doing the walk several times, but as I began to pray about it, I was reminded that cancer doesn’t care if it isn’t the right time or how busy you are, and it really doesn’t care how beautiful your hair is.”
“When there is the choice between your hair and your life, you choose life,” Barnes added.
She did previous walks in Washington, D.C., San Diego and Philadelphia for her grandmother, Barbara Ann Hopkins — a cancer survivor who lives in Anniston, Ala.
Each year, Barnes has met her $2,300 goal, but recent adverse publicity related to Susan G. Komen donating money to Planned Parenthood has her convinced it may be tougher this year.
“Since those debates, it has been increasingly difficult to fundraise,” Barnes said.
This year’s walk also holds more significance because it will be held about an hour from her grandmother’s home.
“I have the opportunity to have her with me at the opening and closing ceremonies, which I have never had before and I would love to share this experience with her,” Barnes said.
She is asking people to donate $1, $5, $10 or whatever they can spare.
