PRINCE GEORGE—The Wakefield/Waverly 15- to 16-year-olds turned a fifth inning, bases-loaded triple play en route to 7-3 win over the Matoaca Red.

The win at Moore Athletic Complex in Prince George puts the Colts into the championship game, which is expected to be played on Monday or Friday. The location of the game and the team’s opponent has not been determined.

Wakefield scored all of its runs in the third inning, sending 12 players to bat.

Matoaca followed with three runs in their half of the inning.

Kyle Hooper picked up the win, pitching into the third inning. Dillon Hasty followed, scattering three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Hooper was 2-for-2 at bat with a double to deep left field.

Wakefield’s highlight of the game came in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Matoaca had bases loaded with no outs.

Wakefield’s right fielder, Nate Williams, made a diving/falling catch from a line drive hit to his left. Williams hopped to his feet, and fired a bullet throw to catcher Danny McKenney keeping the runner at bay on third.

McKenney then threw the ball to the first baseman and Hooper doubled up that runner.

Meanwhile the runner on third broke for the plate. Hooper threw the ball back to McKenney, who tagged the plate to complete the triple play.
