FRANKLIN—Franklin boys got another big Tri-Rivers District win on Tuesday, defeating Sussex 68-66.

The Broncos improved their overall record to 7-8 and district record to 5-5.

The Tigers had beat the top four teams in the district heading into Tuesday’s game.

“It was a must-win tonight, and that’s exactly what we did,” said Franklin Coach Danny Dillon. “Sussex is very quick and athletic; bottom line is we beat a good team tonight.”

The Broncos went 7-0 early, but the Tigers responded, leading 21-19 at the close of the first quarter.

Franklin regained the lead for good in the second quarter.

The Broncos held Sussex to 16 points in the second and third quarters to head into the final quarter up 48-37. Sussex continued to apply pressure and came within 1 point of the Broncos but could never overcome them.

Franklin players shot 12-for-16 from the free-throw line, assuring the victory.

“Our free-throw shooting is what saved us when Sussex made a run,” Dillon said. “The boys were able to handle the pressure and knock down big shots. This win made us better, and there is no doubt about that.”

The Broncos were led by Justin Grant with 24 points and 5

assists, while Trey Kigler dropped in 17 points. Franti Urquhart had 11 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks, while Deshawn Lassiter made 7 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Sussex was led by Micheal Kee with 19 points.

The Franklin junior varsity squad knocked off Sussex 44-43. The win had a lot to do with the fact that Franklin hit five three-pointers in the first half.

Franklin was led by guards Adam Grant with 14 points while Marcus Stephens added 12.

“It was a great victory pulled off by the Broncos down the stretch to beat a good Sussex team who is in second place in the District,” said junior varsity coach Robby Cutchins.
