WAKEFIELD—Tidewater Academy held on for a 58-50 win despite a fourth-quarter run by Amelia on Tuesday.

The Warrior victory allows Tidewater to hold onto the number one spot in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference.

The first quarter had 1:54 remaining before the visiting Patriots got on the scoreboard. The Warriors held them to 4 points in the first quarter and 7 points in the second quarter and took a 20-11 lead to the locker room.

“We came out ready to play,” said Warrior Coach Walter Westbrook. “I was a little worried because we had key players in foul trouble at the end of the first half.”

Tidewater’s leading scorer, Mike Greene, was held to 4 points in the first half but came to life in the third quarter on driving to the basket to pick up 11 points. By the end of the quarter, the Warriors were up 39-22.

At the 6:08 mark in the last quarter, the Warriors enjoyed a 45-25 lead, but Westbrook said that’s when the team “went flat.”

The Patriots dropped in eight 3-point shots and outscored the Warriors 28-19 during the fourth quarter.

The Warriors were led in scoring Greene with 24 points and Martin Hellyer with 16 points.

The Patriots were led by Reid Jacoby and Jacob Howard, both with 14 points, and Jan Zornjan with 10 points.
